So I just got into Yakuza via Game pass and I saw that Yakuza Kiwami was coming to game pass “Soon” and I just wanted to know when it’ll actually arrive. I’m guessing maybe 2 weeks? Or correct me if I’m wrong.
Welcome to my "2020 Gaming Year in Review" post. This is the fifth instalment of this Year in Review series of mine, going all the way back to 2016, a time that feels so long in the past now. This year, this post will probably be shorter than in years past (he says, before even beginning to write the next couple thousand characters), because I'm now officially in law school and boy, it's a lotta work already. I'm five weeks in, I still don't know shit (as expected), it's easily the hardest challenge I've ever taken on in my life (and that includes failing to beat Dark Souls) and I won't back down from it. This means that most of my day is spent with studying, lectures and the sort, while my limited free time mostly is spent with friends, family and a casual game of FIFA or Football Manager. I barely played any single player games in November and December and this will probably not change until Christmas (and then until March) but I will try and keep reading your posts and hopefully interact with some of you still, time permitting. As I start this journey of reliving the worst year in most of our lives, I'm currently "zooming in on" the worst lecture of my week but at least it gives me the time to write this I guess :D. Even though I've said this post will probably not be as long, I've already written a ton. Let's go! Table of Contents
End of Year Stats / A look back at 2020

3. Top 5 Best Games
4. Top 3 Worst Games
5. Award Ceremony
6. 12in12 list for 2021 + Other Goals
___________ End of Year Stats / A look back on 2020's 12in12 list Last year, I had my "worst" year in terms of games beaten with 29 (46,86,45 before that) and in 2020, I managed to beat 31 games somehow. This does include only 2 games beaten in April, May, June, August, November and December COMBINED. I'm usually beating the most games in January, a month that has come clutch YET AGAIN in 2020, with more than 33% of my beaten games completed in the first month of the year. Let's look at some overall stats first off.
Games purchased/acquired: 58 (95)
This number includes 42 "pure" additions and 16 games that I've re-added. This number would've definitely been higher, if I weren't broke for most of the year. Looking at next year's lineup + all the free games that we're still given from multiple sites, I'd expect next year's number to be close to this year's, even though I won't be gaming as much.
Total price paid: 61 € (90 €)
Most games I've purchased came from Humble Bundles or on big sales. Everything else was free or my brother bought it and I can play it through Steam Sharing.
Avg. price paid per game: 1.05 € (0.95 €)
The reasons for this year's and last year's low numbers are 1) my brother gets some games 2) majority of these games are freebies 3) the rest is mostly from Humble Bundles.
Games removed/abandoned: 30 (35)
This number is getting lower and lower but for the simple reason that I haven't actually played as much as in years past. Expecting this to be lower again next year.
Games beaten: 31 (29)
Somehow this number is higher than last year. If I had to guess, I'd say it's because I've beaten shorter games. (not calculated the below number yet as I write this part). Let's see, if that's true...
Total time spent on beaten games: 296.5 (356)
Aaand I was right. 60 hours less for 2 more games. 296 hours would 49 minutes per day. I think that's pretty interesting because 49 minutes per day on average would definitely be doable, with law school and all, so I'm definitely intrigued as to how 2021 will play out.
Current unfinished games total: 83 (87)
Yey, 4 games lower than last years. At this rate, I'll be done 2041. Seems about right. Original 12in12 List for 2020 (10/12 completed)
Batman Arkham City
Blair Witch | COMPLETE
Bioshock Infinite | COMPLETE
Deponia Doomsday | COMPLETE
Detroit: Become Human | COMPLETE
Half-Life 2 | COMPLETE
Mass Effect 2
Minit | COMPLETE
Orwell: Ignorance is Strength | COMPLETE
Pokémon Sword | COMPLETE
SOMA | COMPLETE
The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine | COMPLETE
Last year I beat 5 of 12, so this was a more successful year in that sense. I started Batman Arkham City when I started uni and didn't get much time into it since, so it'll find a spot in next year's list. Mass Effect 2 might be a bit ambitious for next year, especially since I plan on playing Cyberpunk 2077 for a while when I get my hands on it. Other Goals for 2020
Beat 24 games total
Finish more games than I buy
Stick to a gaming budget of 300 €
Lol at that second goal. ___________ 2. Interesting (or maybe not so interesting) Facts
The first game I've finished this year was Minit on January 1st.
Beaten Game #25 was Viscera Cleanup Detail: Shadow Warrior on September 18th. Last year, I had my 25th completion in October.
I reached the 275 games beaten (total) milestone on February 18th by beating The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine.
I've beaten 0 (!) games that were released in 2020. This is the first time I don't have a completion of a game that was released in the same year. Mafia: Definitive Edition is the only such game I own.
I've finished a bunch of older games (mostly Half-Life) and the oldest is Half-Life 2, which had its initial release date on November 16th, 2004.
I've especially beaten some games that I had in my backlog for quite a while, since I've started building one basically (2015). The game that was in my backlog the longest - that I've beaten - is Bioshock Infinite, which had been on my backlog since September 5th, 2015.
My most played game (total hours) was XCOM 2 (32 hours), followed by Marvel's Spider-Man (30 hours). Last year, I had played RDR 2 for 70 hours.
Beaten games between January and June in 2019: 17 | in 2019: 18
Beaten games between July and December in 2019: 12 | in 2020: 13. I've said this last year as well. I'm weirdly consistent in the 2nd half of the year, but the same applies to the first half this time as well. Interesting.
The last two years, I've given an average rating of 6.8/10. This year the average rating was, *drumroll please* ... 7.1/10. Yey! I did play some sick games this year to be fair.
After 4 games that received 10/10 ratings in 2018 and 1 such game in 2019, a total 2 games received the highest possible grade by me. The reason for twice as many 10's in 2018 is that the way I rated games was a bit different back then
Completions by console: Nintendo Switch: 1 PC: 22 Playstation 4: 2 Xbox One: 6
I have a total of 448 games in my backlog (including the abandoned ones), 289 of those beaten. That's a completion percentage of 64.50 %, an increase by 0.14% from last year. Funniest stat of the year in my opinion.
I've 100%ed two games this year. Marvel's Spider-Man and SOMA.
Gaming series that I've newly developed an interest in:
5 of 31 games seen as the "Top" games of the year might seem a bit much, but all these games on this list are worthy of the praise. Honorable mentions go out to Detroit Become Human and Prey. Here we go!
#5
Game: XCOM 2
Platform: PC
Rating: 9/10
Playtime: 32 hours
I got this game back when it came out in 2016 because I had played the first game (of the reboot) weeks or months prior. If you're a fan of strategy games at all, you're doing a disservice to yourself by not playing the XCOM series. For a story in a strategy game, XCOM's is pretty good imo but where this game really shines is in its ruthless but fun and engaging turn-based combat (though you miss 90+% shots way too often), its base building and the way it makes you attached to your soldiers, who sacrifice their lives to save the Earth (and also your ass as the commander). I don't remember his name unfortunately but I had one female sniper who'd destroy everyone and it didn't matter it she'd have a 50% or 90% chance to get a hit. She would get it. That's the kind of connection that you don't have in most strategy games.
#4
Game: Bioshock Infinite
Platform: PC
Rating: 9/10
Playtime: 12 hours
It's actually criminal to list Bioshock Infinite as #4 on my list but that's a testament to how good the 3 games/series above are. That doesn't take anything away from Bioshock Infinite however, which is a masterpiece in its own right. I really enjoyed Bioshock 2 back when I played it as a teenager. I REALLY enjoyed Bioshock when I played a year or two ago. But the story in Bioshock Infinite is on another level and I'd say that Columbia is just as beautiful as Rapture. There was one scene in this game where you have to escape from the Monument. If you've never seen it and you don't care about a minor spoiler, check it out on YouTube. The music, the thrill of it all. Unmatched by just about anything I've experienced in games.
#3
Game: The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine
Platform: PC
Rating: 9/10
Playtime: 28 hours
I don't have much else to say about the Witcher 3, one of my all time favorite games. I've started playing The Witcher 3 when it came out in 2015, not knowing anything about the series, only finding the game interesting. And the journey came to an end in February of this year, after about 300 hours of playing it. If Cyberpunk 2077 is even half as good, it's going to be an amazing experience but if it matches the quality of The Witcher 3, I might just have to find a way to maximize my free time as best as I possibly can. To think that a game like The Witcher 3 had 2 DLC's worth 40+ hours of playtime for only $25 when it came out is ridiculous. Kudos to CDPR.
#2
Game: Half-Life 2 (including Episodes One and Two)
Platform: PC
Rating: 10/10
Playtime: 17.5 hours combined
I first played Half-Life back in 2017. It was amazing. It did age a bit but not nearly as much as most games from its time. Half-Life 2 made a damn ridiculous jump in cinematics, graphics, setting and gameplay. With each episode, the game got more and more insane, culminating with one of the best experiences I've had this year, Episode Two. This series is just so pure. I'm a fan of collectathons like Far Cry if the gameplay is fun at least but there is nothing like a game with (next to) no collectibles where you just keep moving forward, focus on the main story and experience one epic moment after another. Some gameplay elements in these games are still not replicated to this day or at least not on the same level, which is crazy considering that the game came out 16 years ago. The engine for this game is truly amazing. And also, I love the gravity gun.
#1
Game: Marvel's Spider-Man
Platform: Playstation 4
Rating: 10/10
Playtime: 30 hours
If I were to be 10 years old again, I'd be losing my damn mind at this game. I'm in my mid 20's now and I STILL lost damn near lost my mind at this game. I've played it solo some and my little brother sat next to me in a few sessions as well. We probably had the same joyful expression in our eyes because this game is as close to perfect as I've ever played. The web swinging is awesome and fun until the end. Combat is smooth and easy to understand, but takes a while to master. Gadgets and special moves all are useful and fun to use. You can unlock all costumes just by playing, which is unheard of these days. The story is good. Side missions are fun to do. I don't really have anything bad to say about this game. Can't wait to play Miles Morales next year. ___________ 4.Top3 Worst Games This list is a bit difficult to create these days because I don't usually finish games that I find to be bad. I will list 2 games that I've actually finished and one that deserves a spot regardless. Other than that, I will have a few dishonorable mentions.
Final Fantasy XV: I've even watched the anime, which was solid, before I tried to play this for the 2nd time. I've really tried with this one. But after about 10 hours, I gave up on it again. As per usual with JRPGs, the story might be great and pay off all the shitty quests you need to do but I didn't have the patience for 50 hours of fetch quests, nonsensical dialogue (sometimes) and unlimited enemy spawns. Or for 5 minute car rides for that matter. I have not encountered one quest that wasn't "hey, you don't know me yet, but go get me that thing and I'll give you 2 items". And the follow up quest would be "hey, now you know me, so go get me another thing and I'll give you 2 more items". Up until the point were a cutscene would actually speed things up a bit. The fact that the end of Chapter 1 was just revealed through scenes from the movie is a bit shitty as well.
Borderlands 3: I don't know why I thought this would be fun after not enjoying Borderlands 2 but even the shiny new graphics didn't change my opinion on how boring this game and having to use a shitty gun for most of it is. I've played 20 hours in coop, which supposedly makes everything fun but we were still running around with terrible guns that, admittedly, looked cool but didn't do much damage. It's a looter shooter, so I don't care about 90% of quests being boring/useless but the humor in this series is unbearable to me, so any time anyone talked I was ready to throw up. You might like this series, which is fair but I really don't.
#3
Game: Injustice: Gods Among Us (story mode)
Platform: PC
Rating: 4.5/10
Playtime: 4 hours
This might not be fair because it's the story mode of a fighting game but I do think Injustice: Gods Among Us is worthy of a spot here. Mostly because I just want to mention again that superhero movie plots are dumb and selling their fans short in the way that today's movies are all about action but the worst, most stupid and obnoxious plots there could be. With some superhero fans spending so much time trying to find every Easter egg in a movie, I'm surprised how they don't find those 15 obvious plot holes also. Though I have to admit, Avengers: Infinity War was pretty good mostly. And then End Game completely shits the bed with a fat Thor (like fuck off) playing Fortnite (fuck off for real). Anyway, similar issues can be found in the story mode of this game, one of which I've explained in my main post on this game. (like the scene where Flash is somehow slower than The Green Lantern, Aquaman and someone else, just so>! they get sucked into a portal and not Flash, because that would be an inconvenience within the story they're trying to tell!<). Do I sound bitter? Yes I do. All I'm saying is that if End Game is the best movie ever (or just a good conclusion to the series even), expectations are really low and, as seen with Infinity War and so many other superhero movies, these movies can be way better.
#2
Game: Vampyr
Platform:PC
Rating: DNF
Playtime: DNF
Last year I had A Way Out in this spot. I just want to reiterate how shit of a game A Way Out is and how it makes less sense then everything I wrote about superhero movies above. "Oh, they escaped prison? Cool... What was that? Why we don't have 20 police cars camping in front of their homes, because of course they will return to their families? Well, ehh." This time I choose Vampyr, which should be a bit less controversial for anyone who's reading this section (and I am sorry if you're annoyed by how I annoyed I sound but it's the worst games section, what did you expect :D). Anyway, I didn't finish Vampyr but I've played enough of it to be disappointed as hell with it. The game is mostly talking to characters to unlock dialogue options with other characters to solve some quests while fighting in a pretty average combat system whenever you're not in a conversation. The combat system being average is fine. The dialogue system though is complete shit. I've explained it in my main post on this game and all I can say now is that it truly is too broken to be the main feature of this game. I was really excited to play this but as I said, ended up just disappointed.

Game: Pokemon Sword
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Rating: 4/10
Playtime: 19 hours
A 4 rating might seem high for "worst game of the year". Based on my rating system though, I can't really give anything below a 3 for a game that is functioning and not just a dumb parody or something like that. I wouldn't define Pokemon Sword quite as a "dumb parody" of past Pokemon games and it definitely is functioning. I also actually liked two things about this game, which was my first Pokemon game ever by the way. 1) The arena battle music was nice. 2) The wild area can probably be a fun area to just walk around in, if you're looking for a chill gaming experience. Plus the idea behind the Dynamax system was pretty cool but it didn't really seem to add any tactical value. I won't continue on without mentioning first that Hop is a little bitch and the worst "companion" in any game ever and that includes Ashley in Resident Evil 4. And now I shall continue. I guess me ranting about it could never be taking as seriously as when a long time Pokemon fan would. Then again, that depends on if you want the series to be accessible to new potential fans, which, fair enough if you don't. But why the hell is it OK for Nintendo/Game Freak to do what it's doing? First of all. Two separate versions? It's not a big issue I guess but locking different Pokémon to each version is kind of a dick move. Is there a reason for it or is it just because 1) It's always been like that (which isn't a real reason) and 2) Nintendo is hoping to sell both versions to people who'd like a new/different Pokemon experience, which is basically exactly the same but with gyms looking different, arena fights being against different opponents (woah) and different Pokemon being locked to each version. Way worse than that is the fact that there doesn't seem to be any difference in a Pokemon game from one title to the other. Are they really selling you the same game every few years just with a graphics update, minimal new additions and a new, shitty story? I don't think there are microtransactions in these games but once they're introduced, these games won't really have any difference to sports games. As it stands, the game was lacking life, sympathetic characters and any features that didn't make the game feel repetitive as hell but I guess that's by design. A good story might have saved this for me but this game had one of the worst collections of characters in any game I've played. I personally think Pokemon fans deserve better but again, this is the first Pokemon game I've played, so this is just my opinion on it. ___________ 5. Award Ceremony So far, the two "winners" are Marvel's Spider-Man as my GOTY and Pokemon Sword as the Worst Game of the Year. Here are the winners of all the other awards.
Best Boss Fight:The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine - Dettlaff
[Previous Winner: Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle - Phantom] The boss fight in the Blood and Wine DLC wasn't one that you'll find many "best boss fights in video games" compilations and I didn't think it was mind blowing either. Admittedly, there weren't many good to great boss fights in the games I've played this year but rather a bunch of games with epic conclusions. I do not have a "most epic conclusion award", however. Still, the boss fight against Dettlaff, which I don't remember vividly to be honest with you (a lot of stuff happened since February, you know), it was a more than satisfying conclusion to a great DLC to a masterpiece of a video game. Very gory and atmospheric. RUNNER UP: Marvel's Spider-Man - Otto Octavius
Best Character(s): Bioshock Infinite - Booker De Witt / Elizabeth
[Previous Winner: Red Dead Redemption 2: Arthur Morgan] I've given this award to two characters this year and it's well deserved imo. These characters were extremely well written, had great chemistry and character development and all the twists and turns throughout the story of the game gave me more appreciation for them. Kudos! RUNNER UP: Detroit Become Human: Markus, Kara and Connor
Worst Character(s): Pokemon Sword: Hop
[Previous Loser: Resident Evil 5: Chris and Sheva] If you read what I wrote about Pokemon Sword, you might've picked up on how much I disliked the games characters, Hop in particular. All he would do is show up before and after big story events, run his mouth about becoming great, challenge the player to a fight, get his ass handed to him and repeat. He'd never wait for me either, always telling me to catch up. There was no value ... actually, negative value to him even being in the game. Apart from being the brother of the Champion, he didn't have any relevance. Not that that fact made him any relevant or anything but it's like they forced a partner on the player who was just not likeable at all. RUNNER UP: Pokemon Sword: Olivia
Best Coop Game: Overcooked 2
[Previous Winner: No Winner in 2019] Last year, I only played Resi 5 in coop but that sucked, so I obviously couldn't award it. This year, I've played 2 games from the same series. First Overcooked 2 with my bro who's a couple years younger than me and then the original with my little brother who's 3 years old. Both were different experiences but I definitely preferred the one where I didn't have to work overtime just to have enough stars to advance another level. I had a blast with both games though and I'll probably get the PS5 edition, which adds a bunch of nice features to make the game more accessible to little kids (e.g. no timer). RUNNER UP: Overcooked NEW AWARD
Best/Most Unique Game Mechanic:Minit - one minute loop
I've never played a game with a timer like this before but I do know there are a few others out there. Basically, you have 60 seconds to do as many things as possible and after 60 seconds you die and respawn. The things you've done will remain done however. If you found a sword for example, it will now be in your inventory. It's a very short game, so the mechanic doesn't get old and is definitely making the game a unique experience. RUNNER UP: Blair Witch - Cassette tapes allow you to change reality
Best Game Released in 2020: No Winner
[Previous Winner: The Outer Worlds] As I said, didn't play a single game that came out this year, though I do have Mafia. Will probably buy and perhaps play a few games that release next year though. RUNNER UP: / NEW AWARD
Best Level:The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine - Beyond Hill and Dale...
Did I create this award for just that quest? Yes. And I should probably name the award after it. I guess the setting the quest (I call it level because it works with most games) takes place in is called "Land of a thousand Fables". That should give you an broad idea about it. It's just such a weird and fun detour from the rest of the game and the quest in this world is pretty interesting (as per usual with quest in TW3). RUNNER UP: Half-Life 2 - Ravenholm NEW AWARD
Worst Level:Blair Witch - Chapter 17
Both the "winner" and runner up deserve praise for the best "fuck up the pacing" job of all time. In AC II, they've apparently added two sequences via DLC and in 13, you are basically just mindlessly supposed to kill 8 million targets to then kill the main target. I didn't get anything from it and it's just prove that more content doesn't mean good content. In Blair Witch, a horror game that wasn't great but not the worst in the genre out there, you enter a spooked house. And then you run around in it for over an hour. Any kind of good pacing or atmosphere the game had just vanished by that point. To me, scary is something that is unknown and just making me run around in a small house for 60 minutes is the opposite of that, even if I technically don't know what's coming. At times, it seemed like even the devs didn't know what's coming. RUNNER UP: Assassins Creed II - Sequence 13 NEW AWARD
Best Moment:Bioshock Infinite: Monument Tower
I've described it when I talked about Bioshock Infinite above but man, this whole event was just awesome. Go on YouTube and type Bioshock Infinite: Monument Tower escape if you're curious. RUNNER UP: Half-Life 2: Episode Two - Ending
Best Song: Jesper Kyd: Ezio's Family - Assassins Creed II
[Previous Winner: D'Angelo: Unshaken / Red Dead Redemption 2] As much as a lot of games have flaws in their storytelling, I think it produces the most beautiful music out there. Last year's winner is a song I still listen to from time to time and the same goes for the famous intro song to AC II, which I've fallen in love with immediately. I criticized the game for a lot of things (and stand by that still) but the soundtrack is beautiful. Exemplified by this song. RUNNER UP: Philip Sheppard: Little One - Detroit: Become Human
Best Sounds/Music:Detroit: Become Human
[Previous Winner: Red Dead Redemption 2] Listen to the Runner Up of the award above. Songs don't often make me emotional but the way that song was used during this game, the way the entire soundtrack was put to use, got me close to tears regularly. Beautiful. RUNNER UP: GRIS
Best Storytelling: Bioshock Infinite
[Previous Winner: Red Dead Redemption 2] After all I've already written about this game, this shouldn't come as a surprise. Rarely do games leave me this shook and the Bioshock series has done it twice. It's a storytelling masterpiece in my opinion. RUNNER UP: Detroit: Become Human NEW AWARD
Best Visuals:GRIS
The game is obviously universally praised for its visuals, so this award isn't a surprise. At the start, I thought "just because you made the game more and more colorful, doesn't mean you it's art" but once you figure out what the game is about, it makes sense. RUNNER UP: Detroit: Become Human NEW AWARD
Funniest Game :Deponia Doomsday
As someone who loves comedy and funny games, I had to add this award. I don't know why I find the Deponia series as funny as it is (might be my German side) but yeah, out of all the games I've played this year, this was an easy W for Deponia Doomsday. Not the funniest out of the 4 games but still funny. RUNNER UP: Marvel's Spider-Man
Most Disappointing Game: Pokemon Sword
[Previous Winner: GTA IV] You obviously expect a bit more out of one of the most popular series in the world, so I was very disappointed with the end product. I'd say the game lives more off of nostalgia than being a decent game by any definition. RUNNER UP: Divinity: Original Sin
Most Surprising Game: Overcooked 2
[Previous Winner: Mass Effect] My brother and I just were bored one day and decided to try this via Game Pass. It looked fun but we didn't think it would be that fun. I still play this and Overcooked with my little brother from time to time because he really enjoys it as well. Good little game if you're looking to spend an afternoon playing games with a friend, relative or your SO. RUNNER UP: 11-11: Memories Retold ___________ 6. 12in12 List for 2021 + Other Goals I've nearly completed all 12 games this year. I'm going to be mostly going with shorter games for 2021 because otherwise completing it is just not realistic. There will be one veeery long game though.
Assassins Creed: Brotherhood
Batman Arkham City
Cyberpunk 2077
F.E.A.R.
Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth
Layers of Fear 2
Mafia: Definitive Edition
Metro 2033
Observer
Persona 5
Transistor
Yakuza 0
Well, this list ended up being filled with longer games than expected. I had to add Cyberpunk 2077, a game I don't own yet, for obvious reasons. It's the game I'm most hyped about since Fallout 4. Unlike with that game however, I will wait for bug fixes first and not watch any gameplay videos before starting it. I've done a good job up until this point. Will probably get it around Christmas, if some technical issues that were mentioned are mostly fixed by then. AC:Brotherhood, Batman Arkham City, Layers of Fear 2 and Yakuza 0 are sequels to games I enjoyed mostly, so I had to add those as well. I'm about 70 hours into Persona 5 but stopped (again). It's my #1 goal to finally beat it in 2021, even with the limited amount of time in my hands. The rest are a mix of short and medium length games and I expect to be able to beat them all. ___________ I hope next year we'll slowly but surely be able to return to our normal lives, I hope you all have a great holiday season and am looking forward to reading your Year in Reviews as well. I'll have no lectures for a two week Christmas coming up next week, so that'll free up a bunch of time to read through your posts and also play more games. I don't expect to finish anything else this year though (1) time 2) Cyberpunk 2077), so I'll see you all with a monthly progress post in January.
Apparently SEGA Japan really don't want Japanese players play their games on Xbox.
After the indefinite delay of Yakuza: Like a Dragon* release in Japan, the upcoming Yakuza Collection and Yakuza 6 will not be released in Japan either. This includes Xbox/Win10 and the Steam version. For anyone doesn't know, the Yakuza games (0, 1, 2) currently on Japan Game Pass, is released by SEGA USA. The stance from SEGA Japan for these games on the Game Pass is: 'we do not know anything about these games'. I think something really needs to be straighten out between SEGA Japan and XBOX. Source (in Japanese): https://www.gamespark.jp/article/2020/12/15/104658.html
* for anyone doesn't know, Yakuza Like a Dragon was to be released with the new console. You can see the release date on the official Japanese Xbox website, too. Except right before the new console's release, SEGA Japan then stated they have no idea they are releasing the game, and then postponed the release indefinitely. The game is still not available right now, and will not be available in Japan in the foreseeable future.
This post will be updated regularly so make sure to check back often.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X came out, so I've been able to dive into those at last, not to mention I’m still playing Trails of Cold Steel 4 over a month later. I've finished Aokana finally, after putting it down for a long time, and I don't think I will finish my 12in12 goal of clearing out my backlog as I’m drowning in game releases from now til the end of year. Aokana: Four Rhythms Across The Blue - Nintendo Switch (Purchased August 2020) [Complete] I managed to finish Aokana in October. Its a visual novel that revolves around a sport involving anti grav shoes. I saw the anime adaptation a few years ago and at the time there wasn’t an english version of the visual novel at the time. Overall I enjoyed reading through it, like with the anime it really just clicked with me for whatever reason. I know that there are a few different endings tied to the different characters but I don’t think Im going to replay the game to see them all, but I will most likely end up watching them on youtube. Trails of Cold Steel IV - PlayStation 4 (Purchased October 2020) [Started] This is the most recent and the end of the Cold Steel games, as well as a wrapping up of the Trails series (despite there being another one after this in japan already). Ive said a lot about this series over the last 2 years and everything ive said about the series continues to this game, the world is incredible and well thought out (of course thats the case when you are able to make 9 games in it), the battle system hasn’t really evolved too much since the third game but is still very good so thats not an issue, and while im only about 2/3s of the way through the story is exactly what it needs to be. Not to mention its really cool seeing characters in 3D for the first time, such as characters from the Sky and Crossbell games. Im hoping to finish it real soon. Yakuza Like A Dragon - Xbox Series X (Purchased November 2020) [Started] This is the newest game in the Yakuza series and is a clean break from the previous games, not only is it a new character, takes place in a new city but is also now turn based and has very deep RPG mechanics. Im still very early but I can say the battle system and RPG mechanics are very well implemented and the game features a Job system which is great considering my love for Final Fantasy 5. Like the previous games, the animation is real nice and the voice acting when they have it is good. I can’t wait to play more of it. Spider-Man Miles Morales - PlayStation 5 (Purchased November 2020) [Complete] I played the original Spider Man game earlier this year and really enjoyed it, but obviously a part of my enjoyment for this game is the fact that it is on brand new hardware, but I think my opinion of this game would be the same even if i played the PS4 version. I really, really liked this game, the story was great and hit home in a way that I think a lot of my favourite games have done this year. Like the original there is a ton of stuff to do in the world and all of it is fun to do, the game is relatively short but I enjoyed every minute of it, and its pretty high on my games of the year list. Games I’ve Completed This Year : 27 Games I’ve Completed Purchased Prior to 2020 : 9

"What is Microsoft even doing?" - An in-depth examination of the Xbox Series X pre-launch
2020 has been filled with uncertainty and nothing in gaming is more uncertain than current state of the Xbox brand. Ever since the announcement of the Xbox Series X, Microsoft has made a lot of bad decisions, some are outright confusing. I’ve listed them out for easier reading and some of these points even mix with other points. The Xbox Series X name. Microsoft already got off on a bad foot with their atrocious name. There is nothing here that jumps out at you. When you say Nintendo Switch you know it as the Switch, when you talk about the Playstation 5, you know it as the PS5. The Xbox Series X fails to distinguish itself. Its already easy to confuse the name with their similarly named Xbox One X. The grandma on Christmas trying to get an Xbox for little Timmy isn’t going to know the difference between a One X and a Series X as they use the same suffix. Microsoft has attempted the alleviate this by stopping production on the Xbox One X, but that doesn’t mean that the console isn’t going to be on store shelves come the holidays. With the Playstation you know the difference between a PS4 and a PS5. We’ve already seen this happen in the last decade with the Wii-U’s poor sales, as the name completely failed to distinguish the console. If this name is kept, the Series X will suffer the same fate. This is destined to only get worse with the release of the Xbox Series S, where the suffixes of the two consoles are very similar sounding. I can already see little Timmy asking for an Xbox Series X and his grandma getting him an Xbox Series S because the two letters sound the same. The development names weren’t that great in Scarlett and Lockhart, but Xbox Scarlett and Xbox Lockhart sound not only distinct from each other but also from previous Xboxes. At this stage almost anything would’ve been better. Halo Infinite was a launch title? Xbox Infinite. Boom, better than the Series X already. The new Xbox looks like a Fridge? Xbox Fridge and Xbox Minifridge. Failure of the May showcase. The May showcase promised us gameplay from the Xbox Series X and some gameplay from Halo Infinite. Immediately before the show, they confirmed that it was going to be third-party games only, with some exclusives. In the show we saw a bunch of pre-rendered trailers that did nothing to show off the power of Xbox Series X and very few of the games there were interesting. The notable titles were Second Extinction, The Medium and Scorn, all 3 of which were Xbox Exclusives. The showcase did absolutely nothing to hype anyone up and there was a lot of backlash. Microsoft apologized, promised that the July showcase would be better and promised gameplay there. In the two months before the July showcase, Phil Spencer and Aaron Greenberg hyped up the showcase, promising it to blow us away, and that they were confident in their line-up. They even said that for those who were disappointed in the lack of Japanese games on Xbox they will be pleasantly surprised. As July passed, news of the showcase seemed to be absent until we finally got a date of the 23rd July. As this point the extended wait from the last showcase only served to make the player-base more anxious and expectations were high. Failure of the July showcase. I won’t call the July showcase an outright failure, at least no way near the extent of the Xbox E3 2013 Conference, or even the Xbox May showcase. The July showcase showed off some Halo Infinite gameplay, revealed a slew of new first party and third-party exclusives, and some multiplatform games from both first party and third party. The pre-show showed off Dragon Quest IX and Balan Wonderworld as the Japanese games at were promised from Phil Spencer. The problem was that it was not enough. After being forced to wait for two months, Microsoft confidently stated that 9 out of their 15 studios were being shown off that day, deliberately omitting 6 to save for a later date. The biggest issue with this showcase was the Halo Infinite gameplay, not only was it not on Xbox Series X, it was an older demo that showed horribly dated graphics that are trounced by Halo Reach from 10 years ago. Considering that Halo Infinite was set to release in a few months it brought the confidence of the game to an all-time low and many questions were directed towards Microsoft who for some reason saw that demo as fit for showcasing. Despite seeing a dozen or so new games, having such a weak opener killed their hype train and Microsoft drawing attention to their missing games did not help. In addition, despite their promises, there was no gameplay from the Xbox Series X, with the few games that had gameplay using a PC. Omission of games from the July showcase. Based on the studios that weren’t shown off and the games that were announced but weren’t in either showcase these were what I noticed were missing:
Microsoft Flight Simulator (Xbox Series X port)
Gears Tactics (Xbox One / Xbox Series X port)
Battletoads (First Party Console Exclusive, Day One on Game Pass, Play Anywhere, First shown off in E3 2019)
Age of Empires IV (First Party Console Exclusive, First shown off in E3 2019)
Wasteland 3 (First Party Studio, Multiplatform Release, Day One on Game Pass)
New Super Lucky’s Tale (Originally an Xbox Console Exclusive, Day One on Game Pass, Play Anywhere)
Yakuza: Like a Dragon (Next-Gen Console Exclusive)
Untitled Game from The Initiative (Nothing is known about this)
Project: Mara (Little is known about this)
Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga (Nothing substantial is known except that its based on I C E L A N D)
At the time it was assumed that these games would be shown off at the August showcase, so their omission wasn’t a failure yet. The cancellation of the “August” event, and the release of some of these games without a showcase did draw attention to the failure of these omissions as time passed. What was the reason for their omission? Ori and the Will of the Wisps got a trailer for the Xbox Series X version, so why was New Super Lucky’s Tale left out? Destiny 2 is a third party, multiplatform game that came out in 2017 that doesn’t use Play Anywhere but its DLC is coming to Game Pass, why not include New Super Lucky’s Tale that fits all those criteria and uses Play Anywhere? Psychonauts 2 was from a first party studio with a multiplatform release, so for the same reason why wasn’t Wasteland 3 shown off? Balan Wonderworld is a multiplatform Japanese release, so why not also include Yakuza which actually is an exclusive? Gears Tactics was a critical success on PC so why not have a trailer for the inevitable Xbox One version? Avowed was completely unknown before the showcase and we got a trailer for it, so why not show off Project: Mara which we do know about? Why slow drip feed us news about the who joined The Initiative if you’re not going to show what they’re working on? The rumour here is that its Perfect Dark. Even if a trailer could not be put together, Hellblade 2 didn’t have a trailer, just the developers telling us that they really love Iceland. If Hellblade 2 could have an inclusion with such paltry information, why not tell us about The Initiative’s game? The worst instance was with Battletoads, which dropped a trailer just two weeks after the showcase with a full release just two weeks after that. Which begs the question, why was this not in the July showcase if it was going to be released so soon after? Tell Me Why was featured and it was coming out in just a month, so why not include other games that were coming out at that time? Second Extinction is also worth mentioning. It had a trailer drop about a week after the showcase. While it was in the May showcase, so was The Medium and that got shown off in the July showcase. Why not include Second Extinction? Cancellation of the “August” showcase. It was originally promised that every month would see some form of news about the Xbox Series X leading up to its release. After saying that 9 out of their 15 studios will be shown off at the July showcase with the remaining 6 to be shown off at a later date, the promise by Phil Spencer that the July showcase will only show off games and more specifics were to be shown off on a later date, and lack of a price or release date for the Xbox Series X, it was assumed that August will see another showcase to neatly wrap up the pre-launch. During August 2020, Microsoft announced that they were cancelling plans for any monthly content drop along with a big postponement. What this essentially meant was that there would be no drop in August and Microsoft did not give any clue as to when we would get any more details. Gamescom has come and gone and we’re still in dark about the console. This was a huge failure by Microsoft to communicate with its customers. Omission of XCloud from the July showcase. XCloud is a great service if you live in a country where its available and you can get fast and reliable internet. The world isn’t going to have poor internet forever and Microsoft plans to expand XCloud to other regions, so this service is destined to become one of the most promising parts of the Xbox brand. Microsoft dropped a nice trailer showing off the service, the games you can play and the peripherals to use for it and included that it would be bundled with Game Pass Ultimate for no further cost. The problem with this trailer? It was released just a week after the July showcase. This begs the question, why didn’t Microsoft put this in the July showcase when all eyes were on them? There was no reason not to aside from the flimsy statement that July’s showcase was to only feature games. I’m certain there would be no Xbox fan that would’ve been disappointed with its inclusion in the showcase. Leaving it out only served to ensure that only the hardcore gaming fans know about it for now and none of the general public is talking about it as much as they should. Postponing of Halo Infinite. This game was supposed to be the bread and butter of the Xbox Series X, the launch title that will help the console leave its mark on the generation. It was in development for 5 years, cost $500 million to make and boasts the new Slipspace engine. Come the July showcase, we see an unfinished demo for a game that’s only a few months from release and this attracts a lot of negative press. The game is then delayed until 2021, leaving the Xbox without a proper launch title. Apparently, the game is such a mess that a Halo veteran writer had to be brought in to fix the story and its rumoured that Halo Infinite will be delayed until 2022. While Microsoft has come out to say that its still on track for 2021, considering how unreliable their previous statements have been, I took it with a grain of salt. Its borderline baffling that a company can take so long to make a game, flub its demo so badly and be forced to delay the game. That demo was apparently from January 2020, meaning that COVID was never to blame for the game’s poor state. It was always going to get delayed. Microsoft’s failure on their part was keeping a company that had one underwhelming game and two fully botched games, allowing them to do whatever they want for 5 years and give them all the funding in the world. There was no excuse for that delay aside from a complete and utter failure on 343 Industries’ part and Microsoft failing to reign them in on their part. At this point, Halo Infinite is like another Scalebound. Glut of games in August and the lack of launch titles. In the last month from the July showcase we saw the following releases:
Grounded
Battletoads
Microsoft Flight Simulator
New Super Lucky’s Tale
Wasteland 3
Tell Me Why
4 of these were from Xbox Game Studios and 2 were published by a third party and developed by a first party studio. All 6 games were released Day One on Game Pass. Remember that point I made about the omission of games from the July showcase? The release of Battletoads, Microsoft Flight Simulator, New Super Lucky’s Tale and Wasteland 3 in August without being showed off in either showcase was a huge missed opportunity. Its baffling why they were excluded, considering all these games were available Day One on Game Pass and would be released before any August or September showcase. Microsoft’s decision not to showcase games that were coming just a few weeks after is baffling. It honestly makes no sense to have two showcases and you aren’t even going to show off your own upcoming games, excluding them for no reason. The Xbox Series X is lacking a big launch title with the postponement of Halo Infinite. While all these August games can be played on the Series X, the general gaming public is still stuck in the mindset of “launch titles”. They want a brand-new shiny game to play on their brand-new shiny console. The Series X being fully backwards compatible is feature, but not a selling point. The general public does not care for it as much as Microsoft thinks that they do. Case in point, both the Switch and PS4 have no backwards compatibility and they both outsold the Xbox One. To the general public, it won’t be appealing to play a game from last gen that launched in August on their new next-gen console in November. Considering the year that we’re in, won’t it have been a better move to delay Grounded, Battletoads and Tell Me Why to November to give the illusion of launch exclusives? It is rumoured that Flight Simulator’s console version is going to be a launch title, but that game has nowhere near the appeal of Spider-Man or Halo Infinite. If it was going to be a launch title, then why not release the PC version at the same time? Microsoft’s decision to dump so many of their games in August shows a complete lack of understanding of the minds of their prospective customers. I also want to add in the huge gap in the game releases. Most of the bigger games we saw in the July showcase were to be released on Series X only, indicating a minimum of two years’ wait. Once we get through the August glut of games, the few launch titles then Halo Infinite, there is nothing big from Xbox Game Studios until around 2022. If there was anything big in between, Microsoft has kept us in the dark about it. It makes no sense to show off games from 2022 at earliest and completely leave out games coming out in just a few weeks. Lack of information about the console. Say whatever you want about Xbox’s E3 2013 showcase, but we knew about the console a solid 5 months before its release. We knew about its features, we saw gameplay, we knew the release date and we knew the price. With the cancellation of E3 this year, companies have taken up the opportunity to have their own showcases and gradually drip feed us information, leeching as much as they can from no longer being tied down to one big event. It’s a big win for the company, but a huge loss for the consumer as we’re kept in the dark on purpose. There has been news in the pipeline about the Xbox Series S, but we have yet to get any official information about the console. There are rumours that the consoles are priced at $600/$300 for the X and S respectively, but we just don’t know. There are rumours that the consoles are releasing in November, but again we have no idea. Microsoft stopped production on the Xbox One X, which has similar specs to the leaked information of Series S, but its been over a month since they stopped production and there is no word about the reason for this decision. But worst part about the lack of information is the lack of gameplay from the Xbox Series X. All gameplay we have seen thus far have been from Xbox One or PC. Nothing from the actual console. Microsoft promised us gameplay twice and failed on both occasions. Removal of 12-month Xbox Live Gold Subscriptions. Right before the July showcase, 12-month Gold subscriptions were removed from the marketplace, leaving 3-month as the maximum that could be purchased. Considering it was the end of July, and the assumed release of the Series X at beginning of November, players assumed that this meant that Xbox Live Gold would be removed for the next gen and Microsoft was removing the option to buy these subscriptions that they would no longer offer. It was expected that this would be elaborated on in the July showcase, but it was not. Then it was expected to be elaborated on the August showcase and that was cancelled. We’re still in the dark about this. Microsoft recently revealed that there were to be no changes to Xbox Live at this time which further adds to the confusion surrounding the decision to remove the 12-month subscription in the first place. All this has done is effectively made it more expensive to get a year of Gold. This change only served to bring attention to Xbox’s greatest shortcoming. Free-to-play games still require Gold when no other platform does. This is huge downside to even buying the console when you consider most of the biggest games right now: Fortnite, Apex Legends, Warzone are all free to play with Halo Infinite’s multiplayer also planned to be free to play, as well as Destiny 2 being free-to-play and was shown off by Microsoft. If you need to pay to play online, there’s no plans to remove the paid requirement to play multiplayer and a year of your subscription is more than the competition ($100 for Gold vs $60 for PS+ and $20 for Nintendo Online) why would I ever buy your console? In addition, Games with Gold has been suffering this year. There are very few AAA titles being given out now, and the one title that seemed certain for some reason was excluded this year, Forza Horizon 3. The lack of quality titles on the service has led many to believe that Microsoft plans to discontinue Gold soon. If they don’t, then why has the service gotten so poor recently? Conclusion. It is a very frustrating time to be an Xbox fan. Microsoft has made a variety of questionable decisions and I’m purposefully being kept in the dark about a product I want to purchase. The last year has seen Microsoft repeatedly fail to communicate with their customers, overestimate their products and fail to deliver. They come off as a company that is horribly out of touch with not only their fans, but the general gaming public as a whole. The Xbox Series X is set to be released in November and Microsoft has two months to correct their course or I can easily see them losing another generation.
