Hello
/cruise, I had the amazing experience of going on a Carnival Cruise that stopped at Mezumel, Ocho Rios, and Grand Cayman. Honestly I expected the cruise to be terrible in terms of living arrangements but I was honestly pretty shocked at how each room had its own private bathroom, decent space (okay it is a
little cramped but it's a ship what do you expect), and great room service. It was an experience I'll talk about until I die, but I gotta say, I'm a resort guy now.
What really suprised me was not the foreign workers (Balkanites were the best btw), but their attitude and ignorance. For example I asked about buying the drink package on the third day and was rudely told they don't offer it anymore. Or how I was vaping 5 feet away from the casino area and told to go back to the slot machines. The worst is when I was talking to some girls and was told to move literally 3 feet down the bar because I was smoking a cigerrete. Or when I was vaping and was told I couldn't sit in the chairs because they thought it burned them, but when I told them it wouldn't he just said "fans". If you want to relax and smoke/vape without being sunburned or rained on they make you go to the casinos to pressure you into gambling; which I did not do.
The service was overall pretty good, the only issue was the cruise charging us $600 gratuity before we even got on the ship, then expecting us to tip. What's worse is we were idiots that did tip waiters, we got the same quality of service and no free drinks (despite being told by many that servers would slip us free drinks every now and then if we tipped well). This is the biggest frustration Americans have with European run services that want tips; if we optionally give you tips we expect something in return. This is why Americans LOVE Mexicans and Jamaicans, they know Americans better than Europeans ever will when it comes to service.
The constant events, and early excursions are such subjective issues, but I will say it's better to have them then to not and are a huge plus in my book.
I know it seems like I didn't enjoy it but I did, I was impressed by the living arrangements, room service, events, excursions, and the variety of food (which sadly was free and I did gain some weight). However I rarely went to the events and just enjoyed reading my foreign language book filled with stories to translate while vaping (I know, I'm a huge nerd).
I hope there are people who prefer cruises over resorts in here because I'm still on the fence about going on another one!
