There's nothing like GTA: Online, for better and for worse
The promise of Grand Theft Auto: Online is an intoxicating one. GTAV’s world remains one of, if not the most remarkable in gaming history, and the idea that you and a group of friends can team up and wreak havoc upon that world seems too good to be true.
To some extent, it is too good to be true. GTAO suffers from a myriad of technical issues and limitations, including ridiculous loading times, crashes, game-breaking glitches, and terrible anti-cheat. It’s like a complicated, unwieldy machine with hundreds of unseen components. If it fails, your only two options are to start from scratch, or give up.
But when it all comes together, when you finally find your friends after five minutes of loading screens and ten minutes of yelling at each other on Discord to “go here”, the experience is unparalleled. The first few hours we spent roaming the world were violent co-op magic, like a depraved, extravagant Scorcese montage with a body count that would turn eyes at the ICJ. We did missions, did drugs, blew things up, got haircuts, bought clothes, bought cars, stole cars, shot police, shot pedestrians, and of course, shot each other. Being homebound due to Covid, our at-first daily, then weekly GTA sessions kept us connected, the first time a game had done so since our short-lived Minecraft phase in March of last year.
But yesterday, as we failed the same section of the Diamond Casino Heist for about the twentieth time, one of my friends broke the silence. “Is anyone having fun?”
Several months ago, I posted a rant on this subreddit about the singleplayer, bemoaning its weak story, poor gunplay, unnoticeable progression, and surprisingly empty open-world. I stand by what I wrote, perhaps even more so now that I see how much more compelling GTAV could have been if it had included online’s heists, vehicles, and properties as DLC.
That said, online is not without fault. While there’s a massive catalogue of things to buy, the grinding necessary to purchase these things is awful, making even Cookie Clicker feel productive. GamesRadar says the Heists, which themselves require expensive properties and a substantial initial investment to initiate, net you about 400k an hour, which isn’t all that much considering how much vehicles and properties cost.
We realized early on that the disparity between GTAO’s prices and its payouts was a manufactured pain point, the remedy being the game’s overpriced Shark Cards. Rather than dig out our wallets, we abided by GTA’s longstanding moral tradition and hacked ourselves enough money to buy every car, every property, and every weapon in the game. But even without the grind to worry about, GTAO had no qualms with wasting our time. The loading screens are the most obvious example of this, but these are, I believe, unavoidable given the scope of what you’re loading into. Where it’s less forgivable is in the tedious minutiae and the absence of systems that should be present.
The more we played, the more frustrated I became. Why can I only fast travel to my properties as a CEO? Why can’t I claim all destroyed vehicles at once? Why can’t I skip these stupidly long cutscenes? Why do I have to wait to spawn in a vehicle? In a way, it makes the same mistake as its singleplayer counterpart. Though it has incredible setpieces that you won’t find in any other game, the vast majority of your time is spent preparing for them.
I don’t believe games should have infinite longevity, so I don’t fault GTAO for losing its sheen after eighty-some hours. Overall, I had a good time. Tearing through hordes of cops in a pink Insurgent. The terrific Pacific Standard Heist. Getting picked up by my friend in a disgusting anime car that he claimed wasn’t his. Being repeatedly stalked and kidnapped over the course of several weeks by a hacker named “JOE BIDEN” who’d drive me around the map at light speed and drop boats on my head as I’d try to flee. And above all, having the opportunity to hang out with my friends during a pandemic. These are all experiences I’ll remember.
The hours I spent in loading screens, driving from one side of the map to the other for the hundredth time, and listening to Lester talk about skinny dipping? I’ll remember those too, though nowhere near as fondly.

Sleeping Dogs Poker Mahjong Guide
Sleeping Dogs: Poker Mahjong guide
Hello! I've not seen any advice on how to win at Poker Mahjong in Sleeping Dogs, so here's a guide for anyone who might be struggling with it.
How do I access Poker Mahjong? You can play Poker Mahjong at either of the two gambling dens located offshore to the north and south of the map. These locations are reachable by boat after completing the main story mission 'Bride to Be'.
What are the rules of the game? Poker Mahjong in Sleeping Dogs is basically a form of video poker (see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_poker), but played with a deck of mahjong tiles. The tiles are all of the same suit and are numbered from 1 to 6.
You play against one computer opponent (the house, or dealer). I'll refer to them as your 'opponent' for consistency.
- You first choose how much to bet on the round, from 500 Hong Kong dollars up to 5000.
- Both players are dealt five mahjong tiles. Tiles are numbered from 1 to 6. These tiles are called your 'hand'.
- Your opponent always plays first. He chooses to discard any number of tiles from his hand and pushes them in front of the tiles he plans to keep - you can see from the table which ones will be discarded.
- The above happens before you get to do anything. Then it's your first turn. You can choose to discard any of the tiles from your hand.
- New tiles are drawn from the deck to replace all the tiles that were discarded.
- There is a second turn of discarding and drawing new tiles.
- Once those new tiles are added to your hand, both players' hands are evaluated, and the player with the better hand wins the round.
- If you win the round, you receive winnings based on the payout table.
- If you lose the round, you lose your original bet.
- If the hand is tied, you neither win money nor lose your original bet.
What are the winning hands? The table below shows the ranks of each hand from lowest to highest, along with the payout.
HAND | PAYOUT |
High card | 1:1 |
Pair | 1:1 |
Two Pair | 1:1 |
Three of a Kind | 2:1 |
Straight | 2:1 |
Full House | 3:1 |
Four of a Kind | 4:1 |
Five of a Kind | 5:1 |
Updated: Payouts are implemented oddly in the game. A payout of 1:1 means that you win an amount equal to your original bet. The best hand, Five of a Kind, pays out 5:1 which means that you can win $25000 on a bet of $5000. You don’t actually get your original bet back, though. So, for hands that give 1:1 payouts, actually you only get back your bet, you don’t earn any money for winning.
How does the game decide who wins each round? During the evaluation of both players' hands, each component of your hand is compared against the equivalent in the other player's hand, in order of importance.
- For example, if you have a Full House, say 6's full of 2's (6,6,6,2,2) and your opponent has a Full House of 6's full of 3's (6,6,6,3,3), the sets of three are compared, then the pairs. (In this example, the opponent wins with a pair of 3's beating your pair of 2's.)
- If you both have Two Pair, the higher pairs are compared, then the lower pairs.
- If you both have Straight, the higher Straight (2,3,4,5,6) beats the lower Straight (1,2,3,4,5).
Tiles that aren't part of a winning hand aren't compared - for example, if you both have Four of a Kind 6's (6,6,6,6), the fifth tile is ignored, resulting in a tie.
I'll use 'rank' to refer to the payout table and 'strength' to refer to the numbers on the tiles that make up the hand.
- A higher-ranked hand beats a lower-ranked hand.
- If the hands are of the same rank, a higher-strength hand beats a lower-strength hand.
- It's a tie if the hands have the same rank and the specific tiles that make up the winning combination have the same strength.
The comparing of hands by strength (tile value) isn't stated clearly in the game, so it's easy to not notice this and assume that you have to outright beat your opponent's hand in rank. It also means that (if you ignore the fact you always play second) your opponent has the same chance to draw winning hands as you do. This means in the long term, you would expect to win 50% of the rounds, and with the high payouts on good hands, you can expect to win money over time rather than losing it (unlike most casino games based on chance).
Can I win Poker Mahjong consistently? Yes! Over time, you can beat the computer player consistently. You can make about $100k per (real-world) hour of play, depending on how lucky you get. (It would be more if the controls and animations were faster.)
There's several reasons for this:
- You can expect to win 50% of the time and lose 50% of the time, on average, before taking into account how well you and your opponent play. The payout structure means your winnings on good hands will tend to exceed your losses.
- You get to play second, so you can respond to your opponent's final move before the hands are evaluated. This gives you a slight edge in cases where your opponent decided to stick with a 'safe' hand instead of trying to improve his hand.
- Your opponent tends to overvalue low-strength tiles and undervalue high-strength tiles. These bad decisions can be exploited.
- Your opponent tends to hold on to Straight or Full House hands as long as your hand can't beat them. This means you can sometimes win by getting a stronger Full House or Four of a Kind just before the end of the round.
Obviously some luck is involved, so sometimes you'll have a run where your opponent keeps getting unbeatable hands, or vice versa.
How much should I bet? You should always bet the maximum amount ($5000). However, if you come to the table with less than $100,000 and you're unlucky during your session, you might run out of cash before your luck turns around.
(Poker Mahjong isn't the fastest way to earn money in Sleeping Dogs. If you want to make money fast, you can bet up to $100,000 a time on the cockfighting in Kennedy Town docks. You'll win $100,000 (and get your bet back) if you picked the winning bird.)
What's the general strategy? You get to play after your opponent, so the general approach is to look at what your opponent is discarding, and then translate that information into a strategy for your own hand. Ideally, you want to get a Full House or better. Low Pairs/Two Pairs and Straights are usually not worth keeping. Also, the payouts below Full House are not worth aiming for even if you do beat your opponent with a low hand.
Now let's look at some scenarios in rough order of frequency.
1. Opponent has a low pair (1,1 to 3,3) and is discarding all other tiles. You should aim to get Three of a Kind, Full House or Four of a Kind.
You can do this by building on a Pair of your own (if you already have one starting out), or, if you have a high tile (5 or 6 - if you have both, just keep the 6), you can discard all other tiles and hope for a 5 or 6 to appear in the draw. It'll depend on whether you already have a Pair that would beat your opponent's Pair. If your Pair is the same strength or weaker, discard it.
2. Opponent has Two Pair or you both have Two Pair. There is a good chance that your opponent will improve their hand to Three of a Kind or Full House, so you need to aim for the same. If you have Two Pair yourself, the best way to do this is usually to keep your high Pair and discard the other three tiles. Then you can hope to build a strong Three of a Kind or better.
It's tempting to just discard the one tile that isn't part of your Two Pair, but then you lock yourself out of the possibility of Four of a Kind (which you need if your opponent gets a Full House) and you may end up matching your lower pair, giving you a weak Full House. Also, you're actually less likely to get a Three of a Kind with this play, which would be enough to win if your opponent fails to improve their hand.
The maths for the above play is estimated as follows. Assume each tile has an independent probability of being drawn of 1/6, and your Two Pair is 6,6 and 5,5. Then if you discard the single other tile, you need a 5 or 6 to get a Full House. The chance of this happening is 2/6 = 33%. If you keep the high pair and discard the other tiles, you need a 6 in any of the three new tiles to get Three of a Kind (and 2 or more would make your hand very strong). The chance of getting at least one 6 is 1-(5/6 * 5/6 * 5/6) = 42%.
3. You both have nothing, or your opponent has nothing while you have a low or mid-strength Pair. If you have a high tile, consider discarding everything else and trying to get a good hand using the high tile - especially if your Pair is weak. Otherwise, build on your existing Pair.
4. Opponent has a Straight (1,2,3,4,5 or 2,3,4,5,6). Straight is a weak hand and is frequently vulnerable to a Full House play. You will usually not see your opponent try to build a Straight from having four of the five tiles. It will usually happen instead at the start of the round, or randomly during the round.
Your opponent will hold on to their Straight as long as you have a weaker hand. Your play should be to build on any existing Pair or better in your hand, to aim for a Full House or Four of a Kind. Discard all tiles that don't help with this.
If you start with a Straight, don't bother keeping it. Discard everything except the high tile. Only keep a Straight if it's the last round and your Opponent has a Pair or worse going into the final draw.
5. Opponent has Three of a Kind or Full House, or better. Most of the time you'll lose if your opponent has Four- or Five of a Kind.
You need to aim for a stronger Full House than your opponent's, if possible. If you have a 5 or 6 in your hand, keep that and discard the rest.
Or you might have a Full House, but it's weaker than your opponent's. In that case, you should discard the Pair and hope to get a Four of a Kind with your set of three.
Notes This guide is based on a playthrough of Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition on Xbox One.

The big thing with some cities is that all of their drugs are usually locked to whitelisted orgs. Here you can create 3 types of drugs with uniquely different ways of manufacturing each type.

A break down of Cayo Perico heist with times + tips and tricks i have picked up during my runs this far
So i have run the heist a handful of times by now some solo some duo, and i wanted to figure out wether or not the new heist will be better money over time than the casino heist. Down below theres a full breakdown of how much time i used per setup just to give an idea of how fast this heist can be run. I used the sub aproach and drainage tunnel accespoint.
Scope out the scope out is one of the longer missions what i do to get trhough it relatively quickly is use the quick relocation of the sub to get over to the smugller plane almost instantly (cost 2k). And then on the island itself i have found that if you pick up a motorcycle on the airstrip it is quite easy once youve gotten the hang of it to drive past the checkpoint. once you can drive past the checkpoint you can go all the way from the airstrip to the tower pretty quickly. Another good tip is once your done scoping get caught you get back to the plane much faster. This run the scope out mission took me 13:30.
Next up is all the prep work i mainly use the sparrow and ocasionaly the mk2 once again if the mission is far away i use the quick relocate of the sub.
This run i strugled with stealing the sonar blocker so it took me a little longer than usual with a time of 12:30.
Then i did the equipment preps which this heist were Fingerprint decoder, plasmacutter, and the thing used to cut locks and iron bars cant remember its name right now.
The Finger print decoder and the iron bar cutting tool thing each took 6:30 and the plasma cutter took me a little longer at 7:30.
Last prep i did was the weapons i chose the aggressor kit so far its the one ive found the best to use this mission i managed to complete in 5:45.
Then there was the heist finale which i completed in 12:06 with chossing stuff in the finale screen included.
All in all the prep work and heist took me 64:20 then ontop of that there was som transport time in between setups landing the heist from paying the setup fee to having the payout in my bank at around 1 hour and 10 minutes.
This was by no means a perfect run but paying me just over 1.2 mil (side note the profit obviously varies wheter its on hard or easy and depending on what loot you get to steal) in an hour and 10 minutes i feel like its close enough for me to say that i belive Cayo Perico too be more profitable than the diamond casino (Atleast if you run it solo)

I beat the doomsday scenario heist recently as leader and
Gods sake that was the most difficult heist in the game.
ive beat the cayo perico because its solo and havent personally done the casino job yet but im confident the doomsday is the longest and arduous.
It was also that the three acts preceding its last werent short. act 2 & 3 each had upwards of 10 setups & preps. Difficulty of enemy waves is no joke either.
some of its act missions CAN be unplayable without owning the biggest guns + a surplus amount of armor, snacks
just needed to vent b/c its not worth without high lvl/competent players and definitely not worth the payout $$$

Thoughts on the game as a whole and the new update/outlaw pass
TLDR, I wax philosophical about GTA vs RDO, and my love for both. To skip to my thoughts on the update, keyword search @@@@@ or scroll until you see it.
I’m not sure why this game gets so directly compared to GTAO so much, or gets so much hate for what it is/isn’t. They’re vastly different games from different eras (both in development and in setting) They both offer me drastically different things and different experiences. For that I’m grateful. Red Dead is definitely a slower, simpler, yet deeper experience over the insane consumerism, incessant PvP and criminality of GTA. GTA is great at what it does, and it’s one of my most played games to this day, but Red Dead also falls into those categories. Neither is perfect, both can be frustrating, but both always bring me back.
As for the recent updates and content in RDO, I have very few complaints. As I inferred earlier, direct comparisons to GTA are idiotic, as their focuses are so polar opposite. RDO is about the simple life. Living off the land, scraping a rather comfortable living in the rapidly taming ‘wild west.’ GTA is about frantically getting as rich as possible as quickly as possible, preferably at the expense of other players, and then converting those riches into assets to flaunt. I love both, but I know to expect different things from each. There are no expensive cars in RDO. No helicopters, yachts, player homes, etc. While the last two could potentially be added down the line (replace the yacht with maybe a casino riverboat, or something) I am happy to let that sort of end game content play out over years, just like it did with GTA.
I feel like a lot of people playing RDO missed GTA in its early days on PS3/360. Many don’t remember that it wasn’t until the PS4/XBO versions were out that heists were added. One of the final updates to that generation before support was dropped. Chronologically, RDO is about the same age as GTA was when heists dropped. A bit younger still, I think.
Again, direct comparison is dumb because it ignores the swath of content that RDO started with and added up until now. Story mode, 5 fleshed out careers to enjoy, fairly varied daily challenges, and a swath of dynamic content ready to be discovered in the world. Also remember that the first ‘career’ in GTA, the CEO with its cargo missions, was added well after the first batch of heists. In my opinion, the content that RDO started with, along with the frontier pursuits and other updates more than match up with the few dozen cars and apartments GTA got within the same time in its development cycle. Feel free to disagree.
Another important thing to look at is the ‘greediness’ of the games respective economies. GTA took years to finally start paying decent amounts, and still, many players find most content out of reach. In RDO, I can comfortably afford everything I want and need. Ammo, food, medicine, clothes, etc. While I welcome the addition of more roles, and more ways to spend my earned cash and gold, I do appreciate that Rockstar was legitimately generous when it came to balancing the game. And I stand by this, even with the recent 50% reduction in daily challenge payouts. It was inevitable, and I’m grateful that was all they reduced. The way people abuse and grind the collector role makes me fearful that too will get nerfed one day.
@@@@@
As for the latest update and outlaw pass, it offers some things that have great promise, and some things that offer little interest to me. Bugs aside, (which seem all but fixed, at least for me, knock on wood) I think the bounty hunter role was improved by the additions. Wagon liveries are nice, I enjoy the new, multi-mission bounties, the ability to switch between the legendary and $$$ bounty is so nice. The new gun tricks are awesome. I also ran into a dynamic bounty mission, which was cool. I’m guessing they didn’t but I hope they eventually add the bandit leaders you encounter as bounties to be brought in as well. In general though, bounty hunter is my least played role, mainly because it’s so structured, and often fetch-questy. I prefer the other four roles much more. Especially trader. I love hunting. But this update did make me enjoy it more. I won’t be grinding out the last two levels though. They’ll happen when they happen.
On to the outlaw pass. It offers a lot for me. The standout being the ability to fast travel from the wilderness camp. Being able to cook multiple meats at once and carry more ammo is awesome too (or is that part of the BH skills?) Anyway, I’ll take any outlaw pass they give me and thank them kindly. Even if parts of it are derivative or not interesting to me, I don’t throw the baby out with the proverbial bathwater. I’d pay the 40 gold (I didn’t have to luckily) to just get that fast travel ability when my play session is rushed or I’m getting tired.
I seriously get frustrated when people act like toddlers and stick their noses up at perfectly decent content that’s as suited to Red Dead as one of the unidentifiable cars drip fed over weeks in GTA. Even if it’s not for me, it’s someone else’s dream car, and that’s awesome. If I don’t want a red version of the husky, maybe someone’s dog just died and they can better represent its memory in game. It makes me sad when people scoff at something being low effort in an update. Even the new camp flags based on old brands took artists hours or days to research and reproduce fake brands and logos, that all look very authentic and sometimes humorous. I for one appreciate that work, even if I won’t equip that particular flag.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my experiences with games and my discussions with actual devs on various projects, it’s that they filter out and ignore non-constructive, entitled, and otherwise unhelpful feedback. Everything has merit that can be appreciated. If you can’t see that, you’re either wrong in the head, or immensely childish.

MAME 0.223
MAME 0.223 has finally arrived, and what a release it is – there’s definitely something for everyone! Starting with some of the more esoteric additions, Linus Åkesson’s AVR-based
hardware chiptune project and
Power Ninja Action Challenge demos are now supported. These demos use minimal hardware to generate sound and/or video, relying on precise CPU timings to work. With this release, every hand-held LCD game from Nintendo’s Game & Watch and related lines is supported in MAME, with Donkey Kong Hockey bringing up the rear. Also of note is the Bassmate Computer fishing aid, made by Nintendo and marketed by Telko and other companies, which is clearly based on the dual-screen Game & Watch design. The steady stream of TV games hasn’t stopped, with a number of French releases from Conny/VideoJet among this month’s batch.
For the first time ever, games running on the Barcrest MPU4 video system are emulated well enough to be playable. Titles that are now working include several games based on the popular British TV game show The Crystal Maze, Adders and Ladders, The Mating Game, and Prize Tetris. In a clear win for MAME’s modular architecture, the breakthrough came through the discovery of a significant flaw in our Motorola MC6840 Programmable Timer Module emulation that was causing issues for the Fairlight CMI IIx synthesiser. In the same manner, the Busicom 141-PF desk calculator is now working, thanks to improvements made to Intel 4004 CPU emulation that came out of emulating the INTELLEC 4 development system and the prototype 4004-based controller board for Flicker pinball. The Busicom 141-PF is historically significant, being the first application of Intel’s first microprocessor.
Fans of classic vector arcade games are in for a treat this month. Former project coordinator Aaron Giles has contributed netlist-based sound emulation for thirteen Cinematronics vector games: Space War, Barrier, Star Hawk, Speed Freak, Star Castle, War of the Worlds, Sundance, Tail Gunner, Rip Off, Armor Attack, Warrior, Solar Quest and Boxing Bugs. This resolves long-standing issues with the previous simulation based on playing recorded samples. Colin Howell has also refined the sound emulation for Midway’s 280-ZZZAP and Gun Fight.
V.Smile joystick inputs are now working for all dumped cartridges, and with fixes for ROM bank selection the V.Smile Motion software is also usable. The accelerometer-based V.Smile Motion controller is not emulated, but the software can all be used with the standard V.Smile joystick controller. Another pair of systems with inputs that now work is the original Macintosh (128K/512K/512Ke) and Macintosh Plus. These systems’ keyboards are now fully emulated, including the separate numeric keypad available for the original Macintosh, the Macintosh Plus keyboard with integrated numeric keypad, and a few European ISO layout keyboards for the original Macintosh. There are still some emulation issues, but you can play Beyond Dark Castle with MAME’s Macintosh Plus emulation again.
In other home computer emulation news, MAME’s SAM Coupé driver now supports a number of peripherals that connect to the rear expansion port, a software list containing IRIX hard disk installations for SGI MIPS workstations has been added, and tape loading now works for the Specialist system (a DIY computer designed in the USSR).
Of course, there’s far more to enjoy, and you can read all about it in the
whatsnew.txt file, or get the source and 64-bit Windows binary packages from
the download page. (For brevity, promoted V.Smile software list entries and new Barcrest MPU4 clones made up from existing dumps have been omitted here.)
